Jonah Hex Banner

He was a hero to some, a villain to others...and wherever he rode people spoke his name in whispers. He had no friends, this Jonah Hex, but he did have two companions: one was death itself...the other, the acrid smell of gunsmoke...

Howdy partner.

This here is a collection of Jonah Hex information and links that I rustled up after roaming near and far over the barren plains of the World Wide Web. See, it had been my intention to create the first Jonah Hex site this side of the Pecos, but then I done found that others had staked their rightful claims before myself. So instead I've listed his chronicles and then I'll humbly direct yourself and others on the trail of the nastiest, fastest, most low down dirty gunslinger to ever foul the pages of comics.

Superboy #54, 55 (1998)
The New Hex The first appearance of the new female Hex, a former supermodel-turned-mysterious-shooter.
The folks at rec. arts. comics. dc. uni. universe describe her as a busty red-head ex-supermodel with a fashionable scar, riding a dragon-esque DNalien (called Grokk) which is all the back story we get so far. Apparently she channels the spirit of Jonah Hex into herself and is able to fire energy bullets out of empty guns. In these appearances she seemed to be having flashbacks to when she was Hex in a former life. This is a plain weird idea, but kinda entertaining as well. »more»

Trail of Time
Desperadoes writer Jeff Mariotte mentioned in an interview early 2006 that he just finished a then unnamed novel for DC Comics featuring Jonah Hex. Now he has discussed a few more details:
..also a fan of The DCU's cast of Western characters, which helped him pen the soon-to-be-announced DC Universe based novel Trail of Time... a time-travel epic starring Superman, the Phantom Stranger and The Demon, which ends with a climactic battle in 1872 Arizona, where our heroes encounter some of DC's greatest Western characters (including Jonah Hex, El Diablo, Scalphunter, Bat Lash and Johnny Thunder). Mariotte jumped at the chance to lend his talents to the series of novels, the stated goal of which was to team some of the DC universe's flagship characters with some of their lesser-known brethren. 'When it was offered to me, it sounded like a lot of fun because I could play with some of DC's great roster of characters who probably wouldn't get a whole novel of their own,' said Mariotte.

Jonah Hex make an cameo appearance in this comic, shown dressed in his western and post-apocalyptic garb. Seems Superboy-Prime's attacks on the Crystal barrier separating him, Superman of Earth-2, his wife, Lois Lane of Earth-2, and Alex Luthor of Earth-3 from the regular DCU are having interesting effects, creating "conflicting truths". Speculation is mounting amongst Jonah Hex fans regarding what this means continuity wise for Jonah's time travel tales in Hex.

Jonah Hex: No Way Back
To celebrate the release of the feature film DC will simultaneously realease an original Jonah Hex graphic novel, created by writing team of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti paired with legendary Hex artist Tony DeZuniga.
"Jonah Hex has a brother," Gray revealed. "That's the idea that came up decades earlier in discussions between writer John Albano and Tony DeZuniga. Tony casually mentioned this to us and that idea has been brought to life in the hardcover. Bold, brazen violent and surprisingly tender, this is the consummate tale of the Wild West's greatest bounty hunter."
"This is the first all original Jonah Hex graphic novel and a dream project for us," Palmiotti said. "Jonah is one of the coolest and most unique characters we have ever had the pleasure to work on. He's an icon for all ages and his untamed manner appeals, on a visceral gut level, to just about everyone who reads it. In this, Hex's first original graphic novel, we unleash the beast like you have never seen before."

cover by Tony DeZuniga Discover how Jonah Hex's rough family life transformed him into the justice-thirsty vigilante he became. Legendary Hex artist Tony DeZuniga returns to illustrate a new, archetypal epic written by the acclaimed HEX team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. This heartbreaking, brutal original graphic novel is set against the unforgiving landscape of the Wild West and delves into Hex's painful past, revealing for the first time how his difficult upbringing made him that era's most feared bounty hunter. Along the way, Hex must come to terms with the death of a loved one, long thought lost, battle El Papagayo and his gang of bandits, and attempt to make peace with his own past.

The Ballad of Jonah Hex
Ian Frazier wrote this song in 2006 all about Jonah, well before he heard of any plans for a movie. Now that they are producing the film, he is hoping to get it included on the soundtrack In mid 2009 Ian recorded a new version and released it on a two track titled Tomahawk Scar for itunes at Long Beach Comic Con on October 2nd. He had the chance to play the song for Jimmy Palmiotti at his booth there. In the run up to the relase of the film the youtube videos for the song have all been taken down.

The 6 Parts to come...
Jimmy Palmiotti spoke at Mega Con 2009 about future plans: an upcoming 6-part arc featuring the debut of classic Jonah Hex arch-nemesis, Quentin Turnbull. Known widely for its monthly 'done-in-one' stories, this arc marks the four year old title's first large story arc. Palmiotti also mentioned the latest news on the Jonah Hex film-that John Malkovich had joined the cast of the film as Quentin Turnbull-stating, 'Between Josh Brolin and now John Malkovich, sounds like it's shaping up to be a really cool flick.' He quickly added that Jonah Hex #50 would be double-sized and featuring artwork by Darwyn Cooke. »more»

The Brave and the Hex
As promised Jonah turns up in Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode Return of the Fearsome Fangs. The episode was written by Todd Casey and directed by Brandon Vietti.
The synopsis: Fox, Vulture and Shark join the evil Shadow Clan in an attack on the ancient Wudang Temple and kill Master Wong Fei in a battle of flying arrows and martial arts. Flying swords, ninjas and the supernatural collide when Batman and Bronze Tiger must face their former colleagues. When the Terrible Trio steals the Wudang Totem and transform into unstoppable mystical creatures, it's up to Batman and Bronze Tiger to save us all!
Phil Moris Fox provides the voice of Hex

Lost Two Face/Hex story
Jimmy Palmiotti made mention of a lost story that sounds interesting: ...we actually has a two face /hex sort of story pitched with the history of the dent family name involved and the bat office killed it at the time.

The latest Jonah Hex news thanks to the ever inquisitive folks at:

Michael L. Fleisher Interview
In early 2008 I swapped emails with this writer who created much of the legend of Jonah Hex. While the interview focused on his recently published novel Shambler, I managed to slip in a few questions about his work on the series. Michael L. Fleisher: Never in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time...

Comic Book Issues Cover Comic Book Issues #1
Michael Browning has been quiet regarding his fanzine project (draft cover shown) for a while now, but recent comments from Michael suggest it will still see the light of day: I'm very excited about the Jonah Hex project and I think everyone will be very pleased when I'm given the green light to release the news.
I've done interviews with Michael Fleisher (Mr. Fleisher is the best interview subject I've spoken with in my 15 years in the fan press and gave me a lot of insight into his work on Jonah Hex), Jimmy and Justin, Tony DeZuniga, Dick Ayers, John Albano, his sister-in-law Sandy Albano (who took care of Mr. Albano during his last months), Rich Buckler, Carmine Infantino, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Ernie Chan, Keith Giffen, Mark Texeira, Joe R. Lansdale, Tim Truman, Dick Giordano, Bob Greenberger, Mike Gold, Sam Glanzman, Russ Heath, Luis Dominguez and several others. Sounds very much worth the wait!

Jonah Hex Sales Chart

The consistant line from the title's creators and DC is that international sales are healthy and the trades do so well that the title isn't on the chopping block. I have been worried in the past, but after so many months with a gradual decline in readers and no sign of cancellation, and with a movie in production, I am now firmly of the belief that this title is bulletproof, and will never be cancelled... ever!
