Top Town to Return
- Details
This December TVNZ are bringing back 'Top Town' and your mayor has been invited to enter a team. He may have already said 'yes' or 'no' on our behalf but you should ask him!
We are looking for 15 towns to join in the competition. To be eligible a town must have an elected mayor. Each team will contain 12 members, six female and six male. We also welcome cheer squads, supporters and mascots.
The entire competition will be held over 8 days in early December in Christchurch.
Each team could include a local hero, a sporting or entertainment personality who is brought back from the big city to compete for their home town.

In response to immense public demand, TVNZ is proud to announce DVD releases marking three pieces of New Zealand history.
Next month, a comprehensive two-disc package paying tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary's life and legacy will be released.
Sir Edmund Hillary 1919 - 2008 includes TVNZ's coverage of the State Funeral of Sir Edmund Hillary in Auckland; the TV ONE documentary Remembering Sir Ed: A Tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary examining the legend, his life after summiting Mt Everest and the legacy he has left behind; and the Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Sir Edmund Hillary, from St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.
A donation of $5 from the sale of each DVD will be made to the Himalayan Trust.
"We are privileged to make this keepsake of Sir Edmund Hillary available to New Zealanders, which includes a record of the final chapters of his life," says TVNZ General Manager Content Licensing, Leigh Wilson.
And in the first in a new series of TVNZ Classics, the unforgettable television adaptation of the Maurice Gee novel Under The Mountain is also being released in May.
The children's science fiction television series thrilled and frightened a generation of viewers, and continues to have a loyal following.
"Although Under The Mountain screened in 1981, it is still one of our most requested series by both Kiwis at home and abroad," says Wilson. "The demand for classic television series on DVD has increased significantly in recent years, and many broadcasters such as the BBC and ABC in Australia are responding to this demand and releasing selected archival series on DVD. We hope Under The Mountain will be the first in a series of well-loved Kiwi classics to be released on DVD. We are thrilled to make this available to its loyal and ardent fans."
In June, TVNZ will also release the recent documentary The Wahine Disaster, which drew a huge response from viewers when it was broadcast to mark the 40th anniversary of the event.
Sir Edmund Hillary 1919 - 2008, Under The Mountain and The Wahine Disaster are distributed by Roadshow Entertainment (NZ) Limited on behalf of TVNZ .
Sir Edmund Hillary 1919 - 2008, RRP $39.99, release date May, TVNZ captions for the hearing impaired available for the funeral coverage and Remembering Sir Ed.
Under The Mountain, RRP $29.99, release date 13 May 2008.
The Wahine Disaster, RRP $29.99, release date: 11 June 2008, TVNZ captions for the hearing impaired.
The mention of a line of classic TVNZ dvd releases is great news - I'll be trying to track down more details and will post any news here...

About KiwiTV

Reading the authoritative survey of New Zealand Drama Ourselves in Primetime by Trisha Dunleavy back in 2006 made me eager to know more about the individual productions, but when I tried to find information I discovered that many great shows from my childhood like Mortimer's Patch, The Governor, Close to Home, and Under the Mountain were sadly neglected on the world wide web. Thus I was inspired to found this site on the 1st of October 2006 and began to try and document as much as I could about New Zealand TV shows.
In some cases this takes the form of a link to a fan page or official site if one exists, or there might be details based on my own research and the kind assistance of visitors.
The main focus for the site is shows from before the 1990s because they pre-date the emergence of the web so aren't usually very well documented, and it also allows me to turn a blind eye to much of the reality TV shows that followed in the wake of the then original and fresh Popstars; I have to say most of the similar shows that have followed in its wake I don't find that entertaining.
I don't add many 21st century productions unless they win an award or get my attention by being released on physical media as keeping up with all the output of local tv channels would be a full time task in itself, and most recent shows are likely to have their own website somewhere out there for people to access so don't need my help.
If you have any information, memories, links or questions about NZ TV shows feel free to add them to this site. I'd especially appreciate any help to document the shows that don't ring any bells with me.
