His TV career began as a frontman for Town and Around, while finishing his BA in Dunedin, then he worked with it full-time when it became  The South Tonight. He then moved to current affairs in Christchurch  as a reporter-director on the documentary series Focus. Auckland viewers saw him as host for Look North in 1974. In 1975 he worked on the TV2 shows Points of View and Sunday Special, and a presenter in the early Telethons.
