AKTV2's folk music show with Gale Garnett.

GALE GARNETT, whose NZBC produced series Just Folk is on the rounds of the local channels, claims that she took up singing as a form of self-defence.

Originally from Auckland, Gale, who started out as an actress, found that because of her dark hair and dark eyes from a combination of English, Irish and Russian descent, she was always cast in American dramas as an Indian or a Latin.

If I had had to wear one more of Katy Jurado’s hand-me-downs, I would have screamed!

So Gale became a singer, and found, oddly enough, that her success as a vocalist brought better acting roles.

I still play Indians and Latins, but now I get more substance to them.

As a singer, Gale is an exuberant individualist, She writes practically all her own material, is adept at ad-libbing, and far from being afraid of her audiences, heckles them before they have a chance to heckle her.
