TV3 has called in the Soviet air fleet to get its outside-broadcast van to New Zealand in time for the network’s opening on November 27. The station has chartered a Soviet-made Antonov AN-124 transport, the world’s largest aircraft, to fly the van from Sydney to Auckland next week. A spokesman, Mr Ron Taylor, said the cost of the charter was US$13O,OOO. He said the AN-124 was the only aircraft capable of taking the van, which is 4m high, 2.5 m Wide and 11m long.

The van is being built in Sydney. Work has fallen behind because of technical difficulties and shipping the vehicle by sea would have caused further delays. TV3’s inventory manager, Mr Brendan McNeice, arranged the aircraft charter. He learnt that the Antonov had been chartered to fly a load of escalators from Europe to Melbourne. The van, which will cost more than $3 million, has an eight camera capability and duplicates everything that can be done in the studio.
