The New Zealand Weather Book
This book provides readers with a general understanding of the weather in terms of what happens and why it happens over New Zealand, with special reference to the methods used by forecasters to interpret information for the predictions screened on Television One.
Although forecasting follows a world-wide pattern, this book deals mainly with applications in the Southern Hemisphere and, more specifically, those used by the New Zealand Meteorological Service. The country's weather patterns are explained, together with the area patterns and their variations created by coastal or inland locations, mountains, lakes and rivers. A later section looks at some exceptional weather situations experienced in various parts of New Zealand during the past two decades, analysing the reasons for these occurrences and illustrating each example with a map from Meteorological Office files. Final chapters offer guidance to users of coastal waters in New Zealand, some information for mountaineers, and a glossary.
THE NEW ZEALAND WEATHER BOOK, used in conjunction with individual observations and local knowledge, will assist the interested reader to become his own forecaster. Those with less specialised ambitions will find it a useful and practical addition to the family bookshelf.
