In 1961 the Christchurch press reported that Mr R. T. Alston, secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association, believed that he owned the first television set in New Zealand 25 years before then, which he had bought in Australia. The set was manufactured by the John L. Baird Television Company and worked on the mechanical disc system. Mr Alston claimed he corresponded with Baird, the Scottish television pioneer.
