TVNZ’s OnDemand platform was launched in March 2007 predominantly as a catch up service, initially featuring around 300 videos from about 100 shows.
Some material was free, some required the viewer to pay. The NZ Herald reported "Almost a year on from the launch of TVNZ OnDemand, the portal where TV shows can be streamed for free or downloaded at a cost of $2 to $4 an episode, 200,000 TV shows are being streamed each month to 150,000 local users."
Free video streams of programmes with adverts featured at the beginning and end of the feed had outnumbered paid-for downloads by "many thousands to one" so TVNZ moved all content to advert supported free streams in 2008.
At the time 70 per cent of content viewed on TVNZ OnDemand was new content, the rest was from the broadcaster's archives.
The platform was rebranded as TVNZ+ 13 June 2022
