RTR Sounz! began in November 1989 as Sounz!, a one-hour music magazine programme that aired on TVNZ's Channel 2 (then TV2, now TVNZ 2) at 11am on Saturday morning. It provided a blend of music videos, interviews and competitions.

By 1990, Sounz! was rebranded as RTR Sounz! to align with the RTR Countdown and RTR Megamix shows. Both RTR Sounz! and RTR Countdown were shown on a Saturday in different timeslots: Sounz! at 10am for an hour (following What Now) and Countdown at 6pm for half an hour. RTR Megamix and a new show, RTR New Releases, were shown on Mondays and Fridays as part of 3:45 Live! and ran for half an hour each.  As RTR celebrated its 15th birthday on the morning of Saturday 25 August 1990, the RTR banner became what was known as Pepsi RTR following a naming rights agreement with Pepsi.

By mid-July 1991, the newly rebranded Pepsi RTR Sounz! moved to Sundays at 9am and ran for two hours, and a new show, Pepsi RTR Top 40, took over from Sounz! in its timeslot (Saturdays at 10am). At the same time Dale Wrightson, of the Great Pacific Entertainment Company, took over production of the Pepsi RTR banner; prior to that, TVNZ produced Pepsi RTR in-house and Great Pacific Entertainment produced Shakedown for TV3 (now Three).
