In a series of three programmes Ian Johnstone travels to neighbouring countries of the South Pacific to meet people who are struggling with change as their nations move into independence.

1) Kuria Hughes: Kuria Hughes lives in Honiara, the capital of the Western Solomons, with her husband and three children. General Secretary of the YWCA, and Honiara's only female town councillor, Kuria has a busy public life in a newly independent country, as well as family responsibilities towards relatives joining the drift from the outer islands to town. Executive Producer Tony Trotter
Director Bruce Morrison

2) Timoci Naco: When Timoci Naco left his steady job as a field officer in Fiji's sugar industry. his boss said that he would never survive in private enterprise because Fijians just aren't equipped for success in the hard world of business. Tim has proved him wrong and started a small revolution in a placid Fijian village.

3) Tulitoa Leleua: Tulitoa Leleua lives in the village of Nu'usuatia in Western Samoa. Tuli's elder brothers and sisters are all working in New Zealand, but he will stay at home and hope that Western Samoa's rural development scheme gives him the chance-to learn skills and earn money in the gardens and lagoons around Nu'usuatia.
