Six scientific lectures broadcast as a memorial to a former Director of Broadcasting, Sir James Shelley, who was professor of education at Canterbury University College, dean of the faculty of mental and moral sciences, and an early member of the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society.
The lectures were introduced by Dr. A. Crowther, professor of psychology and dean of the faculty of science at Canterbury University.
- Mr B. T. Withers, senior lecturer in electronic engineering at Canterbury University discussed how the science affects human existence and how it works.
- Dr. B. Stonehouse, lecturer in zoology, spoke about penguins and how warm blooded animals keep warm.
- Professor G. M. Peterson, professor of mathematics, showed how pure mathematics has affected scientific development.
- Mr W. Silvester, lecturer in botany, spoke on the associations between plants and microbes.
- Professor F. M. Henderson, of the civil engineering faculty, dealt with the behaviour of rivers.
- Dr. A. Ross, senior lecturer in physics, and Mr C. Miles, lecturer in physics, gave descriptions of the optical studies being carried out in the department of physics at Canterbury University.
