Reynolds Television produced a colour documentary on the life of Joe Brown, the entrepreneur who was for many years the organiser of “Miss New Zealand” contests.
Joe worked hard in Dunedin and throughout New Zealand to promote local talent and organise dances. He describes his credentials as H.S.O.E: Hard School of Experience.
Joe’s family and colleagues are interviewed. The film discusses his goldmining heritage and his love of racehorses.
Joe’s dances at the Dunedin town hall were well known; he also organised the Miss New Zealand show. Extracts from the show are included. The Howard Morrison Quartet performed at the pageant; Joe and Morrison went on to form their own television show. Elaine Miscall, Miss New Zealand 1963 and runner-up to Miss World talks about the value of the Miss New Zealand contests to New Zealand’s tourism industry.
In 1963, Joe established Search For Talent hosted by Selwyn Toogood. He also established two entertainment venues in Dunedin, the Highcliff Cafe and the Caledonian Catering Co.
Other personalities interviewed include: Neil Collins (DJ), Noel Robson (Radio Announcer), Ralph MacDonald (Mayor of Mosgiel), Les Weinstein (member of the Irish Rovers), Kevin Mills (DJ) and Jim Barnes (Mayor of Dunedin).
