Poems by the New Zealand author Janet Frame were set to music for this work commissioned by the N.Z.B.C. and broadcast on TV, which presented extracts from the rehearsals, and then the final performance of “Three Poems of Janet Frame” for solo voice and instruments. The text for the work taken from Janet Frames book “ The Pocket Mirror” and the music was by Dunedin composer Jack Spiers, who conducted the performance.

The first and third movements were extracts from the poem “Some Thoughts on Bereavement” and the longer second movement was a setting of “People are 111, Dying."

The soloist was the tenor George Metcalfe, backed by 12 members of the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra. John Charles produced the programme.

RNZ has an introduction to the work and a performance available on demand
