Series of performances by the group of four young musicians - two pianists and two percussionists: Barry Margan, David James, Gary Brain, and Bud Jones who specialise in performing twentieth century music.

Episodes

1) Hungarian composer, Bela Bartok 1937 Sonata.

2) “Four Dances from Elektra” by the New Zealander, Edwin Carr, which have been specially arranged for the group

3) a solo piece—“Zyklus.”  described as delving more into the colour of sounds than a melodic line, and has some unusual instruments for classical music such as Indian temple bells and African drums.

Group leader, Barry Margan, has lived as a fulltime performing artist since his return from London in 1966. His work includes public recitals, radio and television recordings, concerto appearances, work with young audiences in schools, and, more recently, coffee bars. He is now piano tutor at Victoria University of Wellington.

Gary Brain studied tympani at the Berlin Hochschuler and later, at the University of Indiana. He was a member of the Covent Garden Orchestra for a short time before returning to New Zealand as co-principal tympanist with the N.Z.B.C. Symphony.

Bud Jones comes from Denver, Colorado, and graduated in music from the university there. He toured New Zealand in 1965 with the Denver University Jazz Band, decided to settle here, and is now sub-principal percussionist in the N.Z.B.C. Symphony.

David James is the youngest member of the group. He comes from Gisborne, but has spent the last five years studying at Auckland University. Although he has already had a great deal of professional experience in New Zealand, including a season as N.Z.B.C. Symphony soloist in the Proms, he plans to leave for the United States this year to extend his piano studies.

Produced at Wellington by John Charles.

Their self-titled album included performances of pieces from the broadcast, and photographs from the tv show were used for the album cover's artwork.
