A compact third-person narrative, shared between the bookish Kingsley Pratt and his malodorous working-class father Harry, depicts the death throes of Kingsley’s marriage over Christmas in the early 1970s, but contains flashbacks to the social and political climate of the pre-war depression years, and to the mixed class parental marriage mentioned earlier.
