The live broadcast of 1987 awards ceremony was news for all the wrong reasons due to bad behaviour on the part of the audience. Hosts Leeza Gibbons and Jeff Bryant were dressed as escapees from a bad 80s Sci-fi TV show with silver jumpsuits. As the evening wore on the presentation was marked by bad language from the audience and confusion and resentment over who was permitted to speak during the awards. Guest John Inman (of Are you being Served fame) endured a torrent of abuse while on stage, subjected to calls of "Get off, ya poofter" from members of the audience. He and fellow guest Leeza Gibbons reportedly blamed alcohol and boredom for the outbursts. See for yourself, as NZ On Screen have put some clips from the show online:
