Butler and the Cumberland Street Murders (29 NOVEMBER 1983)
In the 1880s in boomtown Dunedin, there was a vicious and bloody triple murder and arson. William Butler was seen near the scene of the crime, was found with bloodstained clothes and had an extensive criminal record. It seemed an open and shut case. However, this self-educated ,(in prisons) “sleazy” man. turned on a superb courtroom performance that had the jury entranced and questioning seemingly concrete evidence.
