TV VARIETY SHOW

New Brighton beach, the Christchurch Airport, and the Avon river will become stages next week for variety-show performances being televised in the City for the programme, “Hi Summer” —an hour-long musical programme which will be staged against landmarks in Wellington. Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin, by leading dancers and singers in these centres. A Viscount aircraft is being provided by the National Airways Corporation for a sequence being video-taped at the airport on Thursday next week. It will begin with the aircraft arriving (presumably from Wellington). “I’ve Just Come In From The Windy City” will be sung by Jill Turner, formerly a “Windmill” girl, as she comes down the gangway. Eight dancers will then perform on the tarmac to the music of “Guys And Dolls,” followed by Van Odell singing “Lulu’s Back In Town.”

With rehearsals probably beginning about 7 a.m. and the taping scheduled for completion by 1 p.m., hundreds of persons will be at the airport during the peak hours. They will probably be mystified by the mouthings of the singers. All the singing will be mimed for the video-taping and the voices, recorded earlier in the studio, will be dubbed in when the programme is collated in Wellington. On Tuesday an adagio dance performed by John Pass and Yvonne Soeterik will be taped at New Brighton beach near the pier. On Saturday by the Avon river, near Fendalton road, the Southerners will sing the “Eton Boating Song” and “Down By The River Side.” Marise McDonald, the only performer from outside Christchurch, will sing “Lazy River.”

“Hi Summer” is being produced by Kevin Moore, of Wellington, with Mr P. R. Wilbraham associate producer in Christchurch. The programme is expected to be televised about the middle of the year.
