Three couples, six singles, two rundown houses and one fence between them - a fence that divided men and women, husbands and wives, and became the focus of 12 people chasing the renovating dream of a lifetime. Hosted by Lance Hipkins, and was set in two neighbouring, almost identical houses. They were bland and in need of major renovation.

Six men lived in - and renovate - one house, while six women are doing the same in the house over the back fence. Six of the twelve competitors were couples, each with varying levels of DIY experience. They were joined by six singles, who brought their own skills to the competition.

During the weekly one-hour entertainment show on Monday nights at 7.30pm, the men and women competed to renovate the best rooms. In the half-hour factual programme on Tuesday nights at 8.00pm, a designer and builder would fix any mistakes and put the expert finishing touches on the winning room.

Each week, one male and one female would be eliminated from the show until there were two competitors left, one on either side of the fence. The houses would then be auctioned. The person occupying the house with the highest value increase won the profit from the sale and the house contents. The loser took away their house contents.
